What I learnt from 249 portraits in 2 weeks

Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to be commissioned by La Prairie (a long time client) for custom Mother’s Day portraits for their VIPs.
If 249 portraits sounds like a lot, it’s because it is 😂 and while they gave ample notice to their clients, what inevitably happens is there’s a mad rush at the end as people realise the deadline is closing (and they haven’t gotten a Mother’s Day present yet, oops).

What started as a very civilised project, ended with late nights and portraits strewn all over the studio as I counted and re-counted to make sure all portraits were accounted for. It was an excellent experience because you don’t know the extent of your skill until you’re pushed to the limit!

Here’s what I learnt from the experience:

  • If you think you’re good at something, pressure makes you figure out ways to be better, and faster.

  • Even if you’re rushing, ensure the QUALITY is consistent. It’s not a good look if you deliver everything, but the work is sub-par.

  • The Pomodoro technique works! Breaks work!

  • Working overtime is a privilege in your own business, it means you’re getting work (hurrah).

  • Even if you’re stressed about making a deadline, always be professional with your client - they don’t need to know the intricacies of why, just ask if it can be extended if possible.

  • Always go above and beyond for your client - especially a repeat one. They’ve come back to you for a reason, so prove you’re a legend!
